Help For The Newbie
Hints Tricks and Tips

New-bie A new person on the Internet, known to ask a hundred questions a per hour:
Easily identify by the dark circles under their eyes from late nights online
and the  "deer in headlight" look on their face.Sends you email on every new thing they find !,
from virus warning to jokes that are at least two years old.
Thinks the " SEND TO EVERYONE" button is the greatest thing ever invented !
Approach with Caution: Consider alarmed and dangerous.
We all started somewhere, here are some of the lessons I have learned.
( if any old pro's out there want to add their thoughts here,  Please email me

webmaster@bluediva.com.

1.Get a permanent email address, make sure you can have it forward to your current POP
address. When you change your internet provider you will loss that email address,
making all the letter heads and cards you had made up worthless
Believe me someday you will change internet provider, time will tell !
Just don't forget to have it forward to your new POP account when you do move.
I think www.usa.net is one of  the best out there.
2.Get  a Virus Program and use it , Be careful of strangers !
Know the person or place you are downloading from. That means email Too !
I have never gotten a virus from someone I have known,  or commercial web sites.
3. Never give out personal information if you don't have to ! If in doubt,   do without !
4. Chat Rooms to me are a waste of time, with all the other thing to do on the internet.
But you have a need to talk, go to safe rooms !
Safe chat rooms have a SYStem OPerater or SYSOP for short, also known as a  guardian
or monitor. They have the power to knock someone off a server, when they get out of control
and  type every four letter word they know. Its' still may not be as nice as you would like it,
but it is tolerable. Never, ever, ever give out your real name, address, phone number or
any personal information ! Yes, they sound nice and wonderful, so down to earth.
If they told you they just got out of jail or a mental ward, would you have still chatted with them ?
Told them where you work or go to school ? They are going to tell you what you want to hear.
4. Instant Messaging.  I have just one word    ICQ,
well not really a word  more like three letter. Stands for " I Seek You "
ICQ lets you know when your friends, family or co-workers are online to send them messages
and files. There is also a way to hide from your boss, wife or even your probation officer !
You can even open up your own safe chat  room with just the people you want. But once again
be careful, use the highest security and privacy settings.
I use it everyday, so will you !  www.icq.com
5. Don't reply to Spam email, all it does is verify a working email address,
you will then receive even more Spam. Don't email them to ask to be taken off their email list,
this too verifies your email address. Most email programs have filters,
to help you filter out mail you don't want, if that does not work, the delete button always does.
6. Never give up your passwords. If someone calls or emails you and
tell you they are working on  your account and need your password,
it is most likely a scam ! Contact the company by looking up the phone number or email address
on your own, then contact the company with the information.Know who you are dealing with !
7. You can't eat these Cookies. Web cookies are a little like fingerprints for the internet.
When you receive them they are checking to see if you have the right stuff and when you give
them, you are giving a reply cookie.
From these a webmaster can see who you are, what browser you are using, etc.,etc,etc.
More information then you want to give ! The more you surf, the more Spam you will receive.
Try a cookie blocker software. There are a couple good ones out there. I use AtGuard,
they have a 30 day free trial. I love software that has no learning curve, try it you'll like it
Need help with a general question ?  Fire away  Webmaster@bluediva.com
In other words don't ask me about software unless you send me a copy  :<}
